Saturna, a pristine close-knit community, is a treasure amidst the Gulf Islands. It is relatively inaccessible and this has helped preserve its rural flavour. Beaches and forest surround clusters of houses and small working farms. Cyclists enjoy the natural beauty of a ride across Saturna, although the hills may intimidate some. East Point Road provides a direct route across the island to the lighthouse. This road takes one through the most densely populated areas of the island, although there is no village or "downtown" on Saturna. Approximately eight kilometres from the ferry, Winter Cove Road branches west to Winter Cove Marine Park. East Point Road follows the shore from here all the way to the lighthouse. It passes under huge leaning arbutus trees with spectacular views of Mount Baker (in Washington State, USA) as a backdrop. Although there are no public facilities, beach access trails at Russel Beach and alongside the lighthouse property lead to quiet spots to enjoy the water. On the Return trip the very hardy will not want to miss Mount Warburton Pike. The road to the top is frequented by logging trucks and may not be in good condition, especially in the rainy weather. But the view makes the trip worthwhile. Follow Harris Road to Staples Road which continues to the summit.
