Minutes of meeting of 19 March '05

MARCH 19, 2005 12 NOON
SATURNA WATER CONSERVATION COMMITTEE
FIRE HALL - MEDICAL CENTER

Members present: Brian Dixon-Warren, Hugh Grasswick, Tom Ayers, Lorne Bolten, Louise Peramaki, Rick Tipple.

Minutes of previous meeting accepted.

Status of Long Term Hydrochemical Study: Diane Allen continues with the research and is appearing at the Source to Tapwater Meeting on Mayne.

Status of Placemats Project: With equal grants of money from the Saturna Community Club and the Saturna Islands Trust and donations from Brian Dixon-Warren colour copying and laminating have taken place. There are a number of sets of four or eight for sale and will be offered at island events. Lorne Bolten has taken several to sell. See attatched accounting sheet.

Impact of Saline Intrusion on the Island. With more wells on Saturna becoming saline it is suggested that education about alternative solutions to wells and better systems for water collection be made available to land owners.

Incentives for Water Conservation: Education was the key word. Several suggestions included continuing writing artcles to the Scribbler (Brian), producing a brochure as an insert to the Scribbler (Rick and Lorne to co-operate on the venture), a hand out of the brochure to the ferry line up (Tom), and the brochure to go to Joan Combes to give to all new purchasers of property.

Options Regarding Rainwater Capture and Incentives For: There are no standards or regulations in place for rainwater capture for potable water. It was suggested to have those persons who do collect water to invite the public to a meeting on the topic. Comparisons re price differences between wells and water collection depend upon many things such as when the system is installed, storage capacity, structural details, type of components used, and final use of the system.

Incentives such as becoming aware of total water usage via volunteer water metering was suggested. Brian will write a letter to the CRD asking about rebates for meters.

Bob Burgess and other persons involved in delivering water systems will be asked if they would be willing to give a public talk about the topic.

Brian will write about water metering in the Scribbler.

Source to Tapwater Meeting on Mayne: Judy and Rick Tipple, Graeme Bergani, Tom Ayers, Hugh Grasswick, Brian Dixon-Warren and John Wiznik are attending.

Meeting adjourned 1:30

Any & all input to the committee is welcomed.
